The Foundry, Cape of Good Hope

Established in 2000, The Foundry is the brainchild of Meerlust cellar master, Chris Williams, in partnership with his long-term friend James Reid, a Scot whose day job is managing the Kumala brand from his South Africa base. Owning no vineyards, The Foundry works closely with a handful of growers across the Cape to secure grapes from sites which are best suited to each of the varieties it works with: Syrah, Viognier, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc, recognizing the great wines of the Mediterranean.  All the wines are vinified, bottled and matured at Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch.

Review

"Taut green apple with mineral nuances and spicy complexity. High in acidity, saline and fresh with good fruit concentration and the distinct Cape fynbos [native bush] character. Superb balance and a very long finish. Drink 2015-2018. Highly Recommended." Decanter

"This is Meerlust winemaker Chris Williams' small venture. Floral and lightly spicy nose and palate with barrel fermentation adding flesh and complexity. Drink 2013-2015" [2012 vintage] Steven Spurrier, Decanter

Review

“There will be no 2010 or 2011 Syrah because winemaker Chris Williams lost the vineyard, so the 2009 Syrah comes from purchased grapes. The nose is clean and pure with pressed violet petal-infused dark cherry and cassis fruit, the oak here nicely integrated but clearly requiring a couple of years to fully open. The palate is medium-bodied with a camphor-tinged entry, swith upple and ripe tannins matched with a keen line of acidity. This feels balanced and pure in the mouth with quite a voluminous finish indicative of that fecund, warm vintage. You could actually drink this now although its precocity suggests that it will age for several years.” Neal Martin, Wine Advocate RobertParker.com
