The Foundry, Cape of Good Hope

Established in 2000, The Foundry is the brainchild of Meerlust cellar master, Chris Williams, in partnership with his long-term friend James Reid, a Scot whose day job is managing the Kumala brand from his South Africa base. Owning no vineyards, The Foundry works closely with a handful of growers across the Cape to secure grapes from sites which are best suited to each of the varieties it works with: Syrah, Viognier, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc, recognizing the great wines of the Mediterranean.  All the wines are vinified, bottled and matured at Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch.

"Taut green apple with mineral nuances and spicy complexity. High in acidity, saline and fresh with good fruit concentration and the distinct Cape fynbos [native bush] character. Superb balance and a very long finish. Drink 2015-2018. Highly Recommended." Decanter

"This is Meerlust winemaker Chris Williams' small venture. Floral and lightly spicy nose and palate with barrel fermentation adding flesh and complexity. Drink 2013-2015" [2012 vintage] Steven Spurrier, Decanter

Review

“Crystal-clear pale greenish straw. Clean, crisp, floral nose. Much livelier than many a Grenache Blanc. Just a hint of chew at the end to give it structure. Very appetising, Clearly work has been put in to combat this grape’s occasional heaviness though the granite soils of the Voor Paardeberg may well have done all the work.  13.38%. Drink 2014-2017” Jancis Robinson, Purple Pages of  jancisrobinson.com

"The 2012 Grenache Blanc comes from granite soils in Voor-Paardeberg that Chris told me he picked a little earlier to maintain freshness. Here, he is seeking the textural side of Grenache Blanc. Raised in used oak for 7 months, it has a nicely poised bouquet that demands more coaxing than either the Viognier or the Roussanne, but attractive almond and hazelnut scents emerge after a while. The palate has plenty of pear and lime on the entry. One sample bottle felt a little overworked but another was much better and offered a lovely dry, saline finish that lingered long in the mouth. Drink now-2018.” [2012 vintage] Neal Martin, Wine Advocate eRobertParker.com

“The 2012 Viognier comes from granite soils just 3km from False Bay so it is exposed to a marine microclimate. It was raised for 6 months in used barrels. It has an elegant bouquet that is not too phenolic or smudged: lemon curd, orange zest and just a hint of marmalade. The palate is well-balanced with a crisp line of acidity, and plenty of spicy citrus fruit with that leitmotif of marmalade reappearing on the vibrant, citrus fresh finish with Nashi pear and a saline note (possibly from the sea air?) on the aftertaste. Excellent. Drink now-2017.” [2012 vintage] Neal Martin, Wine Advocate eRobertParker.com

The Foundry Viognier
Vintage: 2015
Country: South Africa
Region: Cape of Good Hope
Colour: White
Grape: 100% Viognier
Size: 75cl

Made from a blend of 2 vineyards: one from Malmesbury shale soils in Wellington and the other from Stellenbosch, The Foundry Viognier 2015 is packed with enticing aromas of exotic fruits, apricots, cream and has an underlying gunflint smokiness which adds complexity. These characteristics follow through to the palate and are balanced by a crisp acidity. A lingering mineral steeliness on the finish makes The Foundry Viognier ideal with food.
