Alheit Vineyards, Western Cape

“Chris Alheit has become the name to drop in recent years for anyone wishing to demonstrate that they have the pulse of the South African wine scene.”
Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate November 2015

Based on Hemelrand, a beautiful mountain farm situated high on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge in Walker Bay, Alheit Vineyards is owned by Chris and Suzaan Alheit and is very much a family affair. Inspired by their time spent working in vineyards across Europe, Chris and Suzaan are passionate about producing wines with a true sense of place, using minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery. They specialise in producing hand-crafted whites, as they believe that the grape varietals have the right level of transparency and purity to express their origins and the results speak for themselves.

“Sourced by Chris and Suzaan Alheit, this is a remarkable, youthful Cape blend of rare, dryland bush-vine Chenin Blanc from Skurfberg, Perdeberg, Bottelary Hills and Kasteelberg with 12% very old vine Semillon from Franschhoek. Subtly herb- and honeysuckle-scented, there’s a honeyed note to its complex, opulent quince, pear and stone-fruit richness which is tempered by a mouth-wateringly long, dry finish.” Anthony Rose,

“The 2013 Cartology Bush Vines is a blend of 88% Chenin Blanc and 12% Semillon. The bouquet is very well-defined with great clarity, very reminiscent of the 2011, opening up with aeration to reveal subtle scents of lemon curd, apricot, honeysuckle and Mirabelle. The palate is well-balanced, harmonious in the mouth, everything understated at first, but it builds nicely toward a taut, saline finish. This seems more aligned to the 2012 than the 2011 and it deserves at least one or two years in bottle. Succinct is the word that comes to mind - and that is not an easy attribute to instill into a wine.” Neal Martin, Wine Advocate

Vintage: 2016

Grape: 88% Chenin Blanc, 12% Old Vine Sémillon

Cartology is composed of rare and extraordinary parcels of mature dryland bush vines with an average age of 30 years for the Chenin. With wonderful depth and complexity, this wine is brimming with bright citrus notes, honeysuckle, fennel, ripe apple and pear. Notes of stone fruits, quince and honey will become more pronounced as it matures. It's no surprise that this was named one of Decanter's top 40 wines of 2015 with its stunning concentraton, mouthwatering acidity, incredible balance and enticingly long finish.
