Bodegas Jiménez-Landi, Méntrida

With 15 hectares of rolling, picturesque vineyards surrounded by olive groves, lavender and thyme, Bodegas Jiménez-Landi is one of Méntrida’s most exciting producers attracting well-deserved attention to this lesser-known Spanish region. Founded in 1963, José Benavides Jiménez-Landi is now leading the way at this family project, practising biodynamics and using minimal intervention to produce their elegant, terroir-driven wines that exude freshness and balance from vines which are between 15 and 60 years of age.

“Colour: very intense cherry. Aroma: red fruit, ripe fruit, balsamic, floral. Palate: good acidity, fruity aftertaste, easy to drink.” GUIA PEÑIN

“The 2014 Bajondillo is a blend of Garnacha with 10% Syrah and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon that fermented separately in stainless steel, with some 30% full clusters and indigenous yeasts. Malolactic is also in stainless steel, and the élevage lasts six months and is carried out in a combination of oak and stainless steel vats. This is an approachable, fruit-driven red blend combining the floral and red berry character of the Garnacha with the meaty tones of the Syrah, nicely balanced and fresh. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine tannins and balanced acidity. Fresh, approachable, easy to drink and quite good value. 80,000 bottles produced.” [2014 vintage] Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate March 2016 eRobertParker.com

“From this excellent family-run enterprise in Mentrida comes this Garnacha– and Syrah-based crianza which matured in lightly toasted foudres for 11 months. With complex black and red berries, toasted spices, earthy and meaty notes, the wine delivers vibrant fruit, freshacidity and subtle oak nuances across the long palate.” Decanter.com

“Colour: very intense cherry. Aroma: ripe fruit, liqueured fruit, mineral. Palate: Tasty, elegant, long, fruity aftertaste.” [2014 vintage] GUIA PEÑIN

“The 2010 Sotorrondero in a blend of 75% Garnacha from younger vines, though still 40-50 years old, and 25% Syrah from 12-year-old vines. The fermentation takes place in steel with malolactic in 300 or 500-liter barrels. It has a fresh, lifted bouquet of dark cherry, crushed strawberry and dark chocolate that is well defined and focused. The palate has a dash of white pepper on the entry as well as layers of chocolate-tinged dark berry fruit with a keen thread of acidity, although it finishes just a little abruptly. Nevertheless, this is a highly satisfying, full-bodied wine. Drink now-2017.” [2010 vintage] Neal Martin, Wine Advocate eRobertParker.com

Grape: 60% Garnacha, 40% Syrah

Recommended by Christelle Guibert of Decanter as one of her top wines under £20, Méntrida ‘Sotorrondero’ Bodegas Jiménez-Landi 2013 is a blend which comes from a plot of 12 year old Syrah located in the village of Méntrida and 45 year old Garnacha located in the town of Real de San Vicente. Young, open and aromatic, it has an enticingly complex nose of raspberry and strawberry with hints of spices, smoke and a meatiness from the Syrah. The palate is medium-bodied with great balance, polished tannins and fine acidity sharpening the focus of the flavours through the supple and tasty finish with great length.

“Colour: very intense cherry. Aroma: expressive, red fruit, floral, wild herbs. Palate: good acidity, fruity, easy to drink, balsamic.” GUIA PEÑIN

“Always among the most aromatic wines of Gredos, the 2013 Ataúlfos is sourced from a single 1.5-hectare plot of old Garnacha in El Real de San Vicente (Toledo) planted at 830 meters altitude on granitic soils. This is a wine of finesse, which in 2013 seems to have a ripe edge mixing violets and some malted cereals that made me think of some peated whiskeys; I've seen this before in some voluptuous Garnachas, and here it seems to be very subtle and add a point of exuberance to the natural elegance of the wine. It is produced with great care to preserve the character of the place through the fruit, fermenting the full clusters in open oak vats with indigenous yeasts;it then aged in contact with the lees in 500-liter oak barrels and in 1,500- and 3,000-liter foudres during a period of some 15 months. The palate shows good integration of the fruit with the oak, like there is more inner strength in the fruit, perhaps provided by the fine granitic minerality, which is a texture and a tactile sensation rather than aromas of flavors. Nice balanced, focused and poised, it should develop nicely in bottle. 1,000 bottles were produced.” [2013 vintage] Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate RobertParker.com
