Bodegas Jiménez-Landi, Méntrida

With 15 hectares of rolling, picturesque vineyards surrounded by olive groves, lavender and thyme, Bodegas Jiménez-Landi is one of Méntrida’s most exciting producers attracting well-deserved attention to this lesser-known Spanish region. Founded in 1963, José Benavides Jiménez-Landi is now leading the way at this family project, practising biodynamics and using minimal intervention to produce their elegant, terroir-driven wines that exude freshness and balance from vines which are between 15 and 60 years of age.

“I preferred the just bottled 2016 Bajondillo to the 2015, a similar blend of 85% Garnacha, 10% Syrah and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon matured for six months in a mixture of oak vats and tank before bottling. The style is very different form the 2015, more on the fruit, rounder and with more focus. The palate revealed some herbal notes and medium body.” Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate RobertParker.com

“Colour: very intense cherry. Aroma: red fruit, ripe fruit, balsamic, floral. Palate: good acidity, fruity aftertaste, easy to drink.” [2015 vintage] GUIA PEÑIN

Méntrida ‘Bajondillo’ Bodegas Jiménez-Landi 2016 is superb value for money. Made from a blend of old-vine Garnacha and younger Syrah, then aged for six months in oak barrels of different sizes, it has an enticing earthy, leather, smokey profile that overlays a delicious, juicy berry character. Medium bodied, with fine grained tannins and a refreshing acidity adding structure, the Bajondillo punches well above its weight!

“From this excellent family-run enterprise in Mentrida comes this Garnacha– and Syrah-based crianza which matured in lightly toasted foudres for 11 months. With complex black and red berries, toasted spices, earthy and meaty notes, the wine delivers vibrant fruit, freshacidity and subtle oak nuances across the long palate.” Decanter.com

“Colour: very intense cherry. Aroma: ripe fruit, liqueured fruit, mineral. Palate: Tasty, elegant, long, fruity aftertaste.” GUIA PEÑIN

“The Syrah is more noticeable in the 2014 Sotorrondero, as it contains some 30% of the Rhône grape to complement the Garnacha. Here 50% of full clusters were used in the fermentation, and the upbringing was extended to ten months and was carried out in a mixture of 500-liter barrels and 1,500- and 3,000-liter foudres, all of them made with French oak. It comes through as quite balanced, nicely balsamic with some developed aromas mixing smoked meats, forest floor, and a nice core of bright berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with some austerity from the granite soils and fine tannins. It has some sesame seed-like flavors and a tasty finish. Nicely balanced and poised.” Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate RobertParker.com

“Pure Garnacha from Gredos, sourced from vineyards in the village of El Real de San Vicente, the 2013 Piélago fermented in open top oak vats with indigenous yeasts with full clusters. Malolactic was in barrel, and the wine matured in the usual combination of 500-, 1,500 and 3,000-liter French oak barrels for 15 months. It has a ripe nose without excess, mixing dry petals and red and black berries, quite fresh and elegant. As in other wines here, I notice the élevage in the palate more than in the nose, with some spicy and toasty flavors, nothing a few months in bottle should not fix, as the wine is nicely balanced. It has fresh acidity and fine tannins, which should lend it a nice development over time. 5,000 bottles were filled in March 2015.” [2013 vintage] Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate RobertParker.com
