Champagne Larmandier Bernier, Vertus

“Larmandier-Bernier is a huge favourite with me. The quality of the wines is stupendous and joyful.”
Jancis Robinson MW, Purple Pages of JancisRobinson.com

Averaging 33 years of age, Larmandier-Bernier’s 15 hectares of vineyards lie on the spectacular terroirs of the Côte des Blancs: Vertus, a 1er cru village, as well as the Grand Crus Cramant, Chouilly, Oger and Avize. According to Pierre and Sophie Larmandier, “the creation of a great Champagne, like the creation of any great wine, begins in the vineyard.” This philosophy is why they manage their vineyards biodynamically, harvesting their grapes manually at optimal ripeness to produce extraordinary expressions of each terroir. Fermentations using natural yeasts in a mixture of stainless steel vats, wooden casks and barrels, together with long, slow ageing at either Brut Nature (0g/l) or Extra Brut (2-5g/l) dosage levels allow for as clear expressions as possible.

Review

“This is one of my favourite grower Champagnes; it always delivers in terms of price versus quality. This 100% Chardonnay is incredibly elegant and polished with notes of citrus and white flower. The palate opens up to a rich texture balanced by notes of tangerine and citrus. With only 4 grams per litre of sugar it is dry, showing purity with an amazing depth and persistence.” Christelle Guibert, Decanter.com

“Restrained nose that suggests great delicacy. Real race and spine and what Len Evans would call line. Not aggressively dry at all, despite being Extra Brut. A fair price. GV” Jancis Robinson, Purple Pages of  jancisrobinson.com

Review

“…this brut is cerebral stuff. High-definition red fruit meets clove, fig leaf, black cherry and smoky/toasty rose in a wine so multifaceted and intriguing it’s impossible to have just one glass.” Alice Lascelles,howtospendit.ft.com

“Actually looks more red than pink! A very raspberry nose. Very pure red berry fruit on the nose with a touch of rose petal and liquorice. A soft tug of tannins and a crisp neat finish. Quite solid and almost more of a red wine. May divide opinion but it’s distinctive. (I love it!)” Tamlyn Currin, Purple Pages of  jancisrobinson.com

Extra Brut 1er Cru ‘Rosé de Saignée’
Vintage: NV
Country: France
Region: Champagne
Colour: Rose
Grape: 100% Pinot Noir
Size: 75cl

Extra Brut 1er Cru ‘Rosé de Saignée’ Champagne Larmandier Bernier NV is made from 100% old vine Pinot Noir planted in Vertus. The ‘Rosé de Saignée’ method of production is rarely used in Champagne, as most rosés are made by blending white wine with a touch of red wine. Here Larmandier Bernier macerates the Pinot Noir grapes for 2-3 days to produce a powerful, deeply coloured wine with intense red fruit aromas and a long, lingering finish. As Robert Parker declares: "Larmandier-Bernier completely redefines what Rosé can be all about with this monumental effort."
