Benefitting from the warming influence of the Gulf Stream and surrounding seas, English wine has gone from strength to strength over the past few decades with greater focus on quality wine production. In fact, it has improved so much that it regularly beats Champagne in blind tasting competitions.

Most vineyards are concentrated in the warmest southern counties of Sussex, Kent and Hampshire, where they share the same limestone-chalk basin as Champagne, stretching from France to the White Cliffs of Dover and across Southern England. Typically English vineyards are planted with white German crossings, such as Seyval Blanc, Müller-Thurgau and Bacchus. However the rise in popularity and success of English Sparkling wines has led to increasing plantings of the classic Champagne varietals: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
