Quinta de Couselo, Rias Baixas

Built in 1163 by the monks of the Monasterio de Santa Maria de Oia, Quinta de Couselo is located in the O Rosal Valley, bordered to the south by the mouth of the Miño River and by the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Their just over 6 hectares of vineyards benefit from the Atlantic influence of mild temperatures, abundant rainfall and sunshine hours required for full ripening of the grapes. Winemaker Jose Manuel Martínez Juste draws from Quinta de Couselo’s long tradition of winemaking to produce seriously elegant and precise wines which reflect the estate’s unique terroir.

“Flagship producer in O Rosal, one of the five sub-regions of Rias Baixas. This is a zesty, fresh, cool-fermented Albariño, resting four months on fine lees. Charming aromas of green apple, stone fruits and delicate floral notes are enhanced on the palate by a bright, balanced acidity and minerality.” Christelle Guibert, Decanter.com

"Fresh, broad and pure fruited with lively lime acidity to invigorate the warmth on the palate and a fine mineral finish." Decanter World Wine Awards, www.decanter.com

“I usually start my annual hunt for the finest Albariño of the Summer when I get over to Portugal on my hols.  This year, the Consejo Regulador of Rías Baixas decided to bring fifty 2015 vintage wines over to London in June – job done and before I have even set foot on a plane!  This will help to soothe the pain of a punitive exchange rate and the inevitable failure rate of so many examples of this oft-soapy grape.  My featured wine, along with its stablemate below gained my top scores.  Bodegas Fefiñanes and Pazo de Señorans were also both superb (do watch out for these as well), but Couselo made from a blend of 90% Albariño, 6% Caiño Blanco, 3% Loureiro and 1% Treixadura showed uncommon length and class overlaying the wonderful counterpoint of its fruit salad nose and crushed shell minerality.” Matthew Jukes, MatthewJukes.com

“The 2014 Quinta de Couselo is a classical Rosal blend, mostly Albariño with some 5% each Caíño Blanco and Loureiro mostly from granitic soils, but with some grapes sourced from vineyards on slate-rich zones. It fermented in stainless steel after a cold soak and matured in contact with the fine lees for some eight months. It had some bay leaf and wet stone aromas over the core of white fruit. The palate is quite balanced with moderate acidity, more polished than I expected. 75,000 bottles produced.” [2014 vintage] Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate April 2016 eRobertParker.com

“If you’re in the mood for seafood-based tapas, there are plenty of good Spanish whites around, albariño being the fashionable front runner, though in my book it’s well worth paying a little extra for the classy Quinta de Couselo ‘Rosal’ Rias Baixas 2013, which includes a smattering of other local grapes.” [2013 vintage] Fiona Beckett, The Guardian

With enticing stone fruit aromas of plum and peach, together with a touch of orange blossom and laurel, Rias Baixas 'Quinta de Couselo' O Rosal 2017 is wonderfully expressive and a delight to drink. On the palate it is refreshing with a crisp acidity and an underlying crushed oyster shell minerality that adds complexity to the ripe stone fruit character which continues to persist on the finish.
